Scientific Background | Wortmannin is a steroid metabolite from the fungi Penicillium funiculosum. It specifically and irreversibly inhibits phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K). This in turn has been shown to inhibit the metabolic effects of insulin, yet the insulin receptor kinase activity is not altered. Because PI3-K is involved in membrane trafficking, and membrane trafficking is important in autophagy, Wortmannin also inhibits autophagy. |
