Cancer Growth Inhibitors
Cancer growth inhibitors, also known as cancer growth blockers, are a biological treatment for cancer that block the growth factors that allow cancer cells to grow and multiply.
Cells communicate through a complex signal transduction system. Growth factors attach to receptors on the cell surface thereby activating a signalling pathway inside the cell. This complex pathway leads to cell growth. Unregulated growth in cells leads to increased cell division and the development of tumours.
The various growth factors are broken down into types based on how they contribute to cell growth. Some growth factors regulate how cells specialize into specific functional cell types. Others increase cellular growth and cause cells to multiply into new cells, while others do the opposite.
Cancer growth inhibitors are labelled by the growth factor or protein they act upon. These include angiogenesis inhibitors, histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, hedgehog pathway blockers, mTOR inhibitors, p53/mdm2 inhibitors, PARP inhibitors, proteasome inhibitors, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
